Reading these legends I was struck by how similar they are - many pools and meres are created as a punishment for wickedness of the people who lived on the site. Obviously floods were supposed to be God's way of showing his displeasure. The stories of drowned bells might originate in the theory that early Christians believed bells to be instruments of the devil and threw the bells into lakes to drown the evil influence.
