Cinderloo Ghost
Shropshire Folklore Introduction
Contents
Around 1970, Stephen Bridger saw the "ghost of Cinderloo". Stephen was 13 at the time and was camping out that night with Keith Evans and Philip Sands. The boys were restless that night and one of them looked out of the tent and called the others: they saw "a shadowy figure of a man riding a horse. It looked to us just like an old cavalry-type uniform ... It made no sound, came down the hill from Cinder Hill to the footpath alongside the Forge pool, stopped for a moment and then continued and went back up another path up to Cinder Hill". Not surprisingly, the boys spent a "bothered" night. Some days later they met a local man, Arthur, who listened to their story and then told them they'd seen the ghost of Cinderloo. He claimed to have seen the ghost quite often. The boys camped at the site many times later but never saw the ghost again... The obvious problem with the story is that none of the Yeomanry was killed at Cinderloo. But ghosts can do whatever they wish, can't they? Source
